AMD charges back into the HPC fray with new systems AMD claims its new EPYC 7601 processor has a three-fold performance advantage over Intel’s best server processors. After years of watching its presence shrink on the Top 500 supercomputer list, AMD is battling back with a new set of EPYC-based server processors and specially-tuned GPUs for high-performance computing (HPC) in a complete server system. The company and its partners announced new servers with the EPYC 7601 processor, which it claims is three times more performance-efficient than Intel’s best Xeon server processors, the Xeon Platinum 8180M1, as measured by SPECfp[i] benchmark. The news came at the Supercomputing ’17 show taking place in Denver. Target workloads for AMD solutions include machine learning, weather modeling, computational fluid dynamics, simulation and crash analysis in aviation and automotive manufacturing, and oil and gas exploration, according to the company. OEMs offering AMD's...

A Manager at Google Wrote the Perfect Email on Time Management

A Manager at Google Wrote the Perfect Email on Time Management "If you don’t have time to read this . . . read it twice." A Google manager wrote a fantastic email to his team about the importance of "making time."   “Why can’t I focus on the same task for more than five minutes?” I keep thinking this to myself. I’ve stared at this screen for 45 minutes, deciding what I can write that you all will want to read. I’m on a deadline. And the pressure is getting to me. So, instead of doing what I should be doing (writing something you’ll want to read and share), I’ve decided to procrastinate. I’ve checked Facebook five times, sent six text messages, refreshed my email more than a few times, answered a couple messages on Slack, and decided that I’m going to take up woodworking in the 45 minutes since I’ve decided to procrastinate. But alas! In my hopeless quest to avoid what I should really be doing ( a hobby I know all about ), I discovered a video from...

Dual WhatsApp: How to Run Two WhatsApp Accounts on One Phone If you’ve got a dual-SIM phone, you can use the different SIM cards to make calls using separate numbers, and send texts using different numbers. But did you know that you can set up dual WhatsApp accounts, and use them both on the same phone? If you’ve ever wondered how to install two WhatsApp accounts on one phone, then you’ve come to the right place. There are a few different ways to do this, and some phone-makers are offering this as a built in feature. In other cases, you’ll have to resort to third-party apps instead, but it’s actually pretty easy to run two WhatsApp accounts on one Android phone. Sorry iPhone users, you are out of luck without resorting to the kind of methods we wouldn’t recommend. Obviously, this method of running two WhatsApp accounts on one phone requires a dual-SIM phone – WhatsApp uses the phone number as your identity, and detects this via an SMS or call, so it has to be a ph...

The Sun sets on Solaris and Sparc - Oracle cut 2,500 Jobs

The Sun sets on Solaris and Sparc Oracle cut 2,500 Solaris and Sparc engineers, marking the end of the Unix operating system and RISC processor.   After years of struggle and fading recognition, it seems the end is finally here for Solaris and Sparc, the Unix operating system and RISC processor designed and championed by Sun Microsystems and inherited by Oracle in 2010. In a move that will win it no PR points, Oracle sent out recorded telephone messages to employees who were let go on the Friday before the Labor Day weekend. Yes, firing by voice mail. Classy. The exact number is being debated, but talk on one message board puts it at 2,500 positions cut . That’s both Solaris and Sparc engineers. The workers affected are primarily in the Santa Clara area, in a former Sun office not even a mile from Intel’s headquarters, but they are in three other states and India as well. Then on Monday, former Sun executive Bryan Cantrill wrote a blog post called “ The Sudden...

How Google is speeding up the Internet

Image
How Google is speeding up the Internet Google has developed an algorithm that speeds up TCP/IP, the internet’s primary data transmission protocol, by up to 14%   Engineers at Google have developed a new algorithm to speed up TCP, the main transport protocol for traffic on the internet, by optimizing the speed at which traffic is sent so it doesn’t clog up the available routes.  They say their acceleration method, called bottleneck bandwidth and roundtrip (BBR) propagation time, measures the fastest way to send data across different routes and is able to more efficiently handle traffic when data routes become congested. Google is already using BBR to speed up its YouTube traffic, and last month the company made BBR available in its Google Cloud Platform . Google says implementing BBR sped up the already highly-optimized YouTube traffic by 4% on average, and as much as 14% in some countries. TCP acceleration efforts TCP developed in the 1970s as part of t...
